Clutch-size Manipulations in the Yellow-headed Blackbird: a Test of the Individual
نویسندگان
چکیده
To test the critical short-term predictions of the individual optimization hypothesis (IOH), Yellow-headed Blackbird (Xanthocephalusxanthocephalus) clutches ofthree and four eggs were experimentally enlarged or reduced by one egg, and broods were monitored until fledging. Predictions that control clutches would a) have greater fledging success than experimental clutches, and b) produce heavier or bigger offspring than enlarged broods were generally not supported. Within control clutches, the number of nestlings that fledged did not increase with clutch size. In fact, three-egg clutches were more productive than the most common clutch size of four eggs. The IOH appears to be unsupported for this population, at least up until the time of fledging. We suggest a potential insurance value exists for the fourth-laid egg, thus explaining the maintenance of a modal clutch size of four eggs

A Comparative Study of Cowbird Parasitism in Yellow-headed Blackbirds and Red-winged Blackbirds
--We compared Yellow-headed Blackbirds (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) and Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) to determine possible explanations for the lack of Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) parasitism on Yellow-heads. Twenty-three cowbird eggs were cross-fostered from Red-winged Blackbird nests to Yellow-headed Blackbird nests. Eleven of the cross-fostered cowbird eggs hatched...
متن کاملExploring the Use of Random Regression Models withLegendre Polynomials to Analyze Clutch Sizein Iranian Native Fowl
Random regression models (RRM) have become common for the analysis of longitudinal data or repeated records on individual over time. The goal of this paper was to explore the use of random regression models with orthogonal / Legendre polynomials (RRL) to analyze new repeated measures called clutch size (CS) as a meristic trait for Iranian native fowl. Legendre polynomial functions of increasing...
متن کاملDifferential investment and costs during avian incubation determined by individual quality: an experimental study of the common eider (Somateria mollissima).
Individuals of different quality may have different investment strategies, shaping responses to experimental manipulations, thereby rendering the detection of such patterns difficult. However, previous clutch-size manipulation studies have infrequently incorporated individual differences in quality. To examine costs of incubation and reproductive investment in relation to changes in clutch size...
متن کاملLife History Trade-Offs Between Longevity and Immunity in the Parasitic Brown-Headed Cowbird?
Life history theory predicts evolutionary trade-offs between investing in immune defense and other traits. We investigated whether reduced longevity was associated with increased investment in immunity in an avian brood parasite, the brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater). Previously we had found that the brown-headed cowbird was unusually resistant to infection with West Nile virus and other pa...
متن کاملAge-dependent costs of cowbird parasitism in Yellow Warblers (Setophaga petechia)
Brood parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater (Boddaert, 1783)) often reduces the reproductive success of their hosts. We examined whether the ability of females to avoid or mitigate the costs of brood parasitism improved with age in a population of YellowWarblers (Setophaga petechia (L., 1766)) breeding near Revelstoke, British Columbia, between 2004 and 2011. Cowbirds parasitized ...
